Body Types

Body type plays an important role in program design. It wouldn’t make any sense to train you like a power lifter if you have the body of a long distance runner. In order for me to assist my clients in reaching their fitness goals, I need to know more information on you based on your body composition by categorization and assessment. 


Body Types (Somatotypes)



Endomorph




An endomorph would be stocky, with a large round body, a short thick neck, short arms and legs, and with a tendency to store body fat. Sports people tend not to be in this category. Weight gain occurs very easily because endomorphs have a very low metabolic rate. An example of an endomorph would be Rosie O’Donnell, John Goodman and Jennifer Hudson. Being of this body type doesn’t doom your success in achieving total fitness. The endomorph body responds well to burst training, high intensity interval training and anaerobic endurance training.


Mesomorph




A mesomorph  would be strongly built, with a broad muscular chest and shoulders, muscular arms and legs, and little body fat. Mesomorphs tend to crave foods that are high in cholesterol and salt. The body turns cholesterol into steroid hormones, which will have a muscle building effect. Female mesomorphs tend to have an hour glass shape and carry most of their weight around hips, thighs and butt. An example of a mesomorph in the sporting world would be Serena Williams, Brock Lesnar and LeBron James. In general, mesomorphs body responds better with strength, power and agility training.

Ectomorph



An ectomorph would be tall and thin, with a narrow body, thin arms and legs, little body fat, wiry muscles and a big appetite but never seemed to gain a pound (like the one you hate at work). Ectomorphs often crave stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and artificial sweeteners. They often have problems with unstable blood sugar levels, which can cause fatigue and cravings for sugar and stimulants. An example of an ectomorphic would be Barack Obama, Lance Armstrong and Dave Chappelle. In general, ectomorphs rank high on aerobic endurance, flexibility and agility.

Most People are not of just one body type. People tend to posses a combination of two or have characteristics of all three body types. If you are an endomorph, with proper training, you can take on characteristics of a mesomorph. If an active ectomorph takes on a light desk job and become inactive, he or she can start to look like an endomorph.
